The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres expressed his support for Lebanon at what he described as a decisive and critical moment for its stability, while calling on Israel and Hezbollah to declare a ceasefire and end the war.
“I strongly call on both sides, Hezbollah and Israel, to declare a ceasefire that will end the war and pave the way for a solution that will allow Lebanon to become an independent country, with respected sovereignty and territorial integrity and where its authorities have, as I said, a monopoly on the use of force,” said the Secretary General.
Guterres, issued the statements after meeting with the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun and assured that the country “was dragged into a war that its people did not want”.
In turn, he condemned the recent attacks that have injured members of the UN peace mission (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, demanding that all parties guarantee the safety of international personnel.
“I sincerely hope that on my next visit (...) I will be able to see a peaceful Lebanon. May I visit a Lebanon where the State has a monopoly on the use of force and where territorial integrity is fully restored and respected,” Guterres added.
