The rapporteurs of the United Nations (UN) warned that the partial blockade imposed by the United States on oil tankers linked to Venezuela constitutes a serious violation of international law.
The experts recalled that the Charter of the United Nations prohibits the use of military force against another State and that an armed blockade amounts to an act of aggression. They emphasized that this measure, accompanied by threats of new actions at sea and on land, endangers fundamental rights, including the right to life, according to a UN press release.
The U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean came after Venezuelan authorities were designated as part of an alleged terrorist organization, whose existence has not been proven. The experts also denounced the extrajudicial executions of more than a hundred people in maritime operations since September, events that they defined as violations of the right to life that must be investigated.
The rapporteurs urged the United States Congress to stop the attacks and lift the blockade, and invited the international community to take urgent measures, from diplomatic protests to General Assembly resolutions, to ensure accountability.
“Collective action by States is essential to preserve peace and global stability,” emphasized experts Ben Saul, George Katrougalos, Surya Deva and Gina Romero, who emphasized that unilateral sanctions seriously affect human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals in Venezuela.
