This Monday, the United Nations Security Council will meet urgently and behind closed doors to discuss and analyze the situation in Syria after the fall of President Bashar al Assad.

The deputy ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United Nations (UN), Dmitri Polianski explained that the call was requested because of “the consequences” of these events “for the country and the entire region”.

He also noted that for Russia it is important to understand the current role of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) deployed in the Syrian Golan Heights since 1974.

After the resignation of Bashar al Assad, the Israeli army announced the deployment of troops inside the demilitarized area in the occupied Golan Heights on the grounds of protecting its population and assisting the UN troops deployed there.
