This Tuesday, the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF), through a statement, indicated that 7.1 million boys and girls in Argentina live in poverty, that is, 57% of minors in the South American country.

“indigence among girls and boys in Argentina increased to 14.3 percent in the first half of 2023, equivalent to 1.8 million girls and boys, 250,000 more compared to 2022,” the statement said.

According to the international body, the situation worsened at the end of 2023 when the national budget allocated to children “shows a 75% drop in real terms”.

“Some of them (children) are even in situations of greater vulnerability: poverty increases when household references have a very low educational climate (83%), in the case of single-parent households (68%) or when they reside in popular neighborhoods (84%),” the report pointed out.

According to what was published on the Xinhua website, Sebastián Waisgrais, a specialist in Social Inclusion and Monitoring at UNICEF Argentina, warned that “if current trends continue, the prevalence of monetary poverty in children and adolescents by the first quarter of 2024 would reach values of around 70%, while indigence would reach 34%, with repercussions on current and long-term well-being.”
