This Friday, the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the detection of two cases of hantavirus in British citizens traveling aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship.

Given the confirmation of this outbreak and the vessel's planned route, Spanish health authorities have been put on alert to coordinate the ship's arrival under strict security measures. A third suspected case is currently being investigated on the island of Tristan da Cunha, while tracing the source of the infection among passengers.

“Of the two confirmed cases, one is in the Netherlands and the other in South Africa,” the UKHSA said, reporting on the current location of those affected for specialized treatment.

The agency assured that, although no other British citizen on board has symptoms at this time, rigorous surveillance will be applied to prevent the spread of the virus. The current priority is to contain the infectious outbreak before the rest of the travelers resume their usual activities in their countries of origin.

As an extreme preventive measure, all British citizens returning from the vessel must comply with mandatory isolation for 45 days. During this period, they will be constantly monitored by medical teams for any late signs of the disease, given the incubation period of the hantavirus.

This prolonged quarantine seeks to ensure that there are no secondary infections once passengers set foot on European soil, especially given the scheduled technical stopover in Spanish ports.

Spain is preparing its Foreign Health protocols to receive the MV Hondius and carry out the relevant inspections without jeopardizing local public health. Cooperation between European health security agencies will be key to managing the disembarkation and safe transfer of affected travelers.

Meanwhile, the cruise ship's operating company is collaborating with investigations to identify the source of exposure to the virus inside the ship and ensure total disinfection of the facilities.
