The Vatican Press Office announced Monday that Pope Francis suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure.

In an official report, the Holy See explained that it was bronchospasm, an event similar to an asthma attack caused by a considerable accumulation of endobronchial secretions.

In this regard, the Vatican indicated that during this new respiratory crisis, doctors carried out two interventions known as bronchoscopies to clear the pontiff's airways, according to the Sputnik agency.

In this context, the Vatican indicated that specialists have resumed the use of non-invasive artificial ventilation as part of the treatment.

Pope Francis, 88, has been admitted to the Gemelli hospital in Rome since February 14, 2025, after suffering from bronchitis that developed into bilateral pneumonia.
