Venezuela and Russia strengthen academic-scientific cooperation

As part of the XIX Meeting of the Venezuela-Russia High-Level Intergovernmental Commission (CIAN), through the subcommittee on Education, Science and Technology, both nations established agreements in the academic and scientific fields.

Among the agreed commitments, there is the agreement between the Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán National University of Sciences (UNC) and the National Research University Energy Institute of Moscow (IEM) for the strengthening of research and for the benefit of peoples.

This alliance, with one of the most important houses of studies in Russia, expands cooperation between both countries, especially in the area of renewable energy.

The Venezuelan delegation in Moscow, as reported in a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MINCYT), is headed by the Deputy Minister of Application of Scientific Knowledge of the Ministry for Science and Technology and director of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), Alberto Quintero.

With this agreement, students and academics from the National University of Sciences Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán will be able to carry out in-depth studies, in addition, it strengthens the education system and the development of information technologies.

The treaty will provide the scientific and technological expertise of domestic and foreign organizations and companies such as Elektrosila, Gazprom, ABB, Motorola, EPRI, Samsung and Huawei.

Venezuelan scientists may also, in the short term, undertake joint research projects to increase capacities and diversify studies, including exchanges of scientific publications.

In the medium and long term, postgraduate programs can be developed in priority areas.

Since 2013, IEM has annually entered the list of the best higher education schools in the world according to QS BRICS.

The results of the work of the subcommission reflect a strengthening of the commitment to collaboration in the Education, Science and Technology sector.

During the meeting, Russia confirmed its willingness to continue awarding scholarships for Venezuelan citizens at Russian universities.

Both partners agreed to support Open Education Centers in Russian and training processes in this area in Venezuela, in addition to the installation of new spaces.

They also committed to implementing an international educational project in physics and mathematics called Power of the Mind, adapted for Venezuela.

In the space field, the launch of the GLONASS ground station, installed in the territory of the aerospace center of the Roscosmos State Corporation and the Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities (ABAE), stood out.

Likewise, cooperation with the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), in areas such as biotechnology and epidemiology.

The possibility of alliances in monitoring circumterrestrial space to detect space debris and natural objects, as well as other activities relevant to both countries, was agreed.

In May of this year, both nations established a Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Treaty, raising the alliance to the highest level, under the leadership of the presidents of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro and of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
