In the framework of the 79th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which is being held in New York, the Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation and Diaspora Affairs of Saint Lucia, Alva Romanus Baptiste.

Regarding their coincidence at this annual meeting of the multilateral organization, the Caribbean authorities confirmed their interest in continuing to deepen the relations of brotherhood and complementarity between their nations, while reviewing the cooperation agenda.

The friendly meeting had “the objective of strengthening the bonds of friendship between our countries and exploring opportunities for cooperation in the future”.

Caracas and Castries established diplomatic relations in 1979. After a recess during the administration of former premier Allen Chastanet (2016-2021), who joined the political and diplomatic aggression against the Bolivarian nation from the so-called Lima Group, friendly ties resumed in August 2021, after Philip J. Pierre took office as head of government.

At the beginning of October 2023, Prime Minister Philip Pierre was on an official visit to Caracas and was received by President Nicolás Maduro at the Miraflores Palace, where they reviewed bilateral cooperation, in which areas such as education, energy, fishing and culture stand out, the latter favored by musical training activities through the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela (The System).

Among other multilateral mechanisms, these countries share membership in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and especially in the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), which Venezuela founded together with Cuba on December 14, 2004 and Saint Lucia sealed its membership on December 14, 2021.
