Venezuela expresses its gratitude for the statement of the African Union in favor of peace

Venezuela deeply values the support and solidarity of the African Union (AU), which rejected the kidnapping of the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, and of the first female combatant, Cilia Flores, a fact that violates the basic principles of international law.

The statement was published by Foreign Minister Yván Gil through his Telegram channel.

The document states that the AU categorically condemns the illegal and unilateral military aggression undertaken by the United States.

In the statement, Venezuela expressed its gratitude for the statement of the African Union in defense of peace, international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of sovereignty and non-intervention that govern international relations.

Addis Ababa, 3 January 2026: The African Union is following with deep concern recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the kidnapping of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicolás Maduro, as well as military attacks against Venezuelan institutions.

The African Union reaffirms its firm commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, in particular respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The African Union stresses the importance of dialogue, the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, in a spirit of good neighbourliness, cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations.

The African Union stresses that the complex internal challenges faced by Venezuela can only be addressed in a sustainable way through an inclusive political dialogue between Venezuelans themselves.

The African Union expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, stability and mutual respect between nations and regions.

The African Union calls on all interested parties to act with restraint, responsibility and respect for international law, in order to avoid any escalation and to preserve regional peace and stability.
