At least 30 activities with a Venezuelan stamp left their mark at the 33rd Havana International Book Fair (FILHCUBA 2025), including talks, conferences and book presentations.
Venezuela brought themes to the Caribbean island that ranged from the life and work of Commander Hugo Chávez, the Bolivarian ideology, hybrid war and blockades against free peoples, as well as going through the dangers of social networks, algorithms and artificial intelligence in a society dominated by capitalist elites; to some internal processes and the struggle of the Bolivarian nation to free itself from the decadent American hegemony in the world.
The Deputy Minister of Development for the Cultural Economy, Raúl Cazal, and the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez; the ministers for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, and for Communication and Information, Freddy Ñáñez; the Attorney General of the Republic, Tarek William Saab; the ambassador in Havana, Adán Chávez; the deputy and journalist Gustavo Villapol; the philosophers Miguel Ángel Pérez Pirela and Carmen Bohórquez, and the historian Amílcar Figueroa, were just a few names that said they were present at this literary festival.
The organizers themselves described FILHCUBA as “a necessary cultural festival (...) expected by those who are committed to and defend the importance of enriching spirituality, especially in the current times”.
At the literary event, almost two million 400 thousand printed copies and two thousand 600 digital titles were exhibited. “Reading is a way to grow, to improve wealth, to improve the soul,” Cuban revolutionary leader José Martí once said. For this reason, this year the fair adopted the phrase “Reading is growing” as its motto, as part of the 130th anniversary of its fall in combat.
