Venezuela participated in the International Knowledge Exchange Meeting on “Strengthening the Effectiveness and Impact of Protected and Conserved Areas”, held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, within the framework of the World Wildlife Program (GWP)

The event was held with the purpose of consolidating a new conservation model based on large ecosystems and unified ecological transitions.

The work agenda combined three days of technical debate sessions (panels, presentations and interactive working tables) with two days of specialized field visits, press release by the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism (MINEC).

The main objectives of the meeting were aligned with the goals of the Global Framework for Biological Diversity (GBF), focusing on exploring national strategies towards achieving Goal 3 (30×30).

The meeting was attended by representatives from more than 30 countries who came together to show and discuss joint mechanisms on Protected Areas, at an event organized by the World Bank and the Government of the People's Republic of China.

The Director of Integration and International Affairs of the Ministry of People's Power for Ecosocialism, Jorneli Omaña, attended this meeting where she was part of the first panel, where she presented results of the management of Areas Under the Special Administration Regime (ABRAE) in Venezuela, which to date managed to achieve the Kunming-Montreal 2030 goal with more than 30% of the national territory with this protection system.

In the same way, it was proposed to exchange lessons learned and international innovations in governance, sustainable financing, the application of Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OCEM), the professionalization of rangers and the mitigation of conflicts through the coexistence between human beings and wildlife, as well as to review and capitalize on the achievements and milestones of China's historic reform in the simplification, zoning and unification of its own national park system.

The meeting was formally convened by the World Wildlife Program (GWP), funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and led by the World Bank Group, with technical support from the China Global Center for Ecological Systems and Transitions (CWGC) and the Sichuan Forest and Grassland Administration.
