This Friday, Venezuela asked the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, to carry out a specific legal evaluation of the Israeli regime's request for participation in the Board of Governors of that multilateral body, in coordination with the Legal Office of the General Secretariat of the United Nations (UN), in New York.
“What interest in the Board of Governors can someone who has shredded a copy of the Organization's founding Charter in the UN General Assembly; whose principal representative, now persecuted by international justice, has declared Secretary General (António) Guterres persona non grata; who has assassinated a significant number of UN peacekeepers and has challenged and attacked the entire United Nations system, its principles and values, publicly and repeatedly?” , questioned Ambassador Claudia Salerno Caldera, permanent representative of Venezuela to the IAEA.
The diplomat reproached the interest of some members of the IAEA in encouraging the membership of the Board of Governors of a country that, being a nuclear power, is not a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty - NPT, is also a real nuclear threat to the Middle East region and to the world, as it is the only one that does not benefit from the IAEA safeguards compliance system. “It is a nuclear power without supervision and in open exercise of a plan of genocidal extermination against the State of Palestine,” said the head of the Venezuelan delegation.
Salerno's intervention took place within the framework of the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, regarding a point discussed in the plenary session entitled “Restoration of the sovereign equality of Member States in the IAEA”.
In view of the interest of some States in promoting the entry of Israel, Venezuela denounced that “it would be profoundly contradictory to the principles of the United Nations and very regrettable for the cause of the members concerned, to promote the participation in the activities of the IAEA of a member who has demonstrated total disrespect for international norms”, referring to the criminal and genocidal regime of Israel.
The Ambassador reiterated Venezuela's support for the arguments of countries that are fighting for their legitimate right to participate in sovereign equality, in principle and legally, with which Bolivarian Diplomacy is willing to continue working, in order to find a transparent, consensual and permanent solution to the current system of participation, which is unbalanced, unfair and contrary to the principle of sovereign equality of States, established in the UN Charter.
