Venezuela rejects UNHCR's method for choosing the Refugee Olympic Team

Venezuela, through a statement issued this Friday, May 03, expresses its rejection of the method implemented by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to choose the Refugee Olympic Team, in view of the inclusion of a member of Venezuelan nationality, who does not meet the relevant criteria to be classified as a refugee.
This was reported by the Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, who explained that the method “inadequately included a man of Venezuelan nationality in the discipline of Sport Shooting, who does not meet the international criteria to be classified as a refugee”.
In the message, Gil attached the statement, in which the Bolivarian Government insists “on the need to respect the principles of International Law and International Refugee Law, such as impartiality, objectivity, non-selectivity and non-politicization in the treatment of issues inherent to the mandate of the UNHCR.”
