Venezuela will commemorate the 20th anniversary of National Chess Day with practices in all states of the country.
The activity is organized by the Ministry of People's Power for Sports and will take place on Friday, April 25, and awards will be given to the best athletes.
“This holiday was declared by the former president of Venezuela, Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, in 2005 as National Student Chess Day, and later, the National Assembly (AN), in the 2023 period, extended the commemoration to the entire country,” explained the general director of Community and Social Sports, Luis Salas.
He added that chess is a type of activity that improves intelligence, critical thinking and the ability to resolve conflict situations.
Around 6,000 people will participate in the practice of science sports nationwide in educational institutions, communities and clubs.
Salas also explained that the ministerial portfolio will merge this chess holiday with the launch of the 2025 Student Games, with activities such as kickingball, baseball and basketball.
