The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, reported through her Telegram channel that Venezuela was designated as the venue for the installation and first meeting of the Technical-Scientific Intergovernmental Panel of the Amazon (PITCA), an instance aimed at producing reports that guide regional decisions on environmental matters and the health of the Amazonian peoples.

The appointment was made during the reactivation of the Special Commission on Science and Technology of the Amazon (CECTA), carried out in Brazil, with the participation of the Venezuelan delegation headed by the Deputy Minister for the Application of Scientific Knowledge, Alberto Quintero, within the framework of the commitments assumed in the Declaration of Belém and the Declaration of Brasilia.

Jiménez noted that Venezuela presented proposals aimed at transforming technical cooperation mechanisms into its own capacities, with an emphasis on coordination between Amazonian States and alignment with the National Plan for Science and Technology. Among the proposals presented, the promotion of a regional network of research centers oriented to open technologies and sovereign biotechnology stood out.

During the meeting, the Venezuelan delegation made available to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) the operational capacity of the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC), a technical node of the PITCA, as well as the Scientific Research Center for Traditional and Ancestral Medicine, which is key to providing data and mapping to the Amazon Regional Observatory (ORA).

The minister indicated that, following the guidelines of the President in Charge Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela supports a model of South-South cooperation based on complementarity, with the objective of strengthening joint actions for the sustainable development of the Amazon region.
