The Venezuelan Chamber of Electronic Commerce (Cavecom-e) warned of the high incidence of digital fraud in Venezuela, despite widespread awareness campaigns and warnings regarding the risks involved.

In a note released by Veneolana de Televisión (VTV), the union's cybersecurity director, Rafael Núñez, explained that the most common forms of fraud are telephone calls, phishing and ransomware attacks.

The attacks are carried out through identity theft or the use of social engineering vector techniques, Núñez said. The expert highlighted that the most common form of fraud focuses on telephone calls, in which criminals pretend to be bank workers and ask the user for confidential information such as PIN, OTP or authentication codes.

Phishing consists of paid campaigns on social networks, through which users are deceived with false offers with which criminals obtain sensitive data or influence their victims to download malicious programs. Ransomware also represents another growing form of digital fraud, in which servers are encrypted to demand ransoms paid with cryptocurrency.

Cavecom-e urged companies and individuals alike to strengthen their digital protection, and to this end, it recommended measures such as multi-factor authentication, the exhaustive verification of information received through social networks and emails, in addition to continuously updating devices and applications.
