The Vinotinto de las Altura beat Brazil 64-58 and became champion of the South American U15 that was held in Ecuador.
The first and second quarters were won by Venezuela 9-13 and 29-21, respectively. While Brazil sought to make a comeback and was left with the third quarter 23-19.
In the fourth quarter, the Venezuelans stood firm in the attack and were left 16-14.
The standout of the match was the Venezuelan Julio Vásquez who scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Followed by Gregory Gavidia who had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists, and Kevin Gutierrez with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The national team finished the tournament with a record of 5-1.
Venezuela had 21 years without bathing in gold in the South American Championship in this category, since it did so in 2023 when it had players such as Greivis Vásquez, Néstor Colmenares and David Cubillán, according to information published by the daily Meridiano.
This is the fourth title in the category for the Vinotinto national team that had already triumphed in Caracas 1986, Guanare 1998 and Cucuta 2003.
The next challenge for the Vinotinto de las Altitudes will be in the FIBA Americas World Championship, category U16, which will give places for the U17 World Cup.
