The World Health Organization (WHO) together with its Member States activated for the first time the Global Health Emergency Corps to support countries facing outbreaks of monkeypox (MPOX).
“WHO and its partners support the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries to implement an integrated approach to case detection, contact tracing, selective vaccination, clinical and home care, infection prevention and control, community participation and mobilization, and specialized logistical support,” said Myke Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program .
18 countries on the African continent have reported cases of the disease in 2024, and the rapid spread of MPOX in at least two other regions has raised concerns about further spread.
In this regard, the capacities of emergency personnel are being evaluated in eight countries affected by the monkeypox outbreak. Including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi, the two countries most affected.
