The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the suspension of drug distribution programs for HIV, ordered by the Government of Donald Trump in the United States (USA), threatens the lives of millions of people in developing countries.
“A sudden and prolonged cessation of these programs will not allow a controlled transition and puts millions of lives at risk,” the WHO said in a statement.
The agency warned that the cancellation could cause an increase in infections and raise mortality to levels similar to the 80s and 90s.
The Trump Administration ordered the immediate cessation of the distribution of drugs purchased with U.S. humanitarian aid, even if they have already been sent to health centers. This decision is part of his policy of cuts to international cooperation, which also included the withdrawal of the United States from the WHO.
Around 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide, and more than 30 million rely on these programs for treatment. In 2023, 1.3 million people contracted the virus and 630,000 lost their lives due to AIDS-related illnesses.
