The delegation of the Russian Federation reported that the session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Syria ended without progress, waiting for “the situation” to evolve.
“The Council was more or less united in terms of the need to preserve the territorial integrity and unity of Syria,” the Russian ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Vasili Nebenzia, told the press.
The session, requested by the Russian delegation, highlighted the consensus to “guarantee the protection of civilians and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the population in need. Basically, that was all,” the diplomat added.
“Everyone was surprised by those events (the overthrow of the government of President Bashar Al-Assad by terrorist groups). Everyone, including members of the UN Security Council,” the Russian ambassador stressed.
He also stressed: “We were talking about the need to prepare a document in the Council. Not today. No one was ready for that today. But I think in the next few days, hopefully, sooner rather than later, we'll see.”
