Temperatures on Earth will continue to rise year after year due to greenhouse gases, said the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), sponsored by the United Nations (UN), reported the Sputnik website .
Greenhouse gas concentrations reached a new record in 2023 and, therefore, condemn the planet to many years of rising temperatures,” highlights the WMO report.
The organization warned that never before in human history has the accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere been so rapid: in just two decades, the increase exceeded 10%.
As the report highlights, the increase was caused by CO2 emissions, the result of forest fires and the burning of fossil fuels for human and industrial activities.
The Secretary General of the WMO, Celeste Saulo, noted that the world is far from meeting the objective of the Paris Agreement of keeping global warming below two degrees Celsius, and reaching the level of 1.5 degrees. “Another year, another record. This should set off all alarms between decision-making bodies,” he warned.
Even if emissions were to fall rapidly, the current temperature level would persist for several decades, since CO2 is a gas that stays in the atmosphere for extremely long periods, the organization said.
