The Cult of María Lionza was recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest of the Nation, as announced by the Deputy Minister of Identity and Cultural Diversity, Ignacio Barreto, who presented the certificate issued by the Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC), during a spiritual and cultural event held in Yaracuy.

From the Cerro María Lionza Natural Monument, he emphasized that “the declaration of heritage entails duties of the State and, above all, of the community for its safeguarding and permanence over time. This declaration covers the different expressions and manifestations surrounding the cult of María Lionza, including the Candle Dance (which already has a separate declaration), as well as those related to the Three Powers (Guaicaipura, Black Felipe and Queen Yara herself).

He also stressed that “this cult is an example of the spirituality implicit in our identity traits, a spirituality that defines us as a people of peace who, at the same time, are capable of giving their lives for their defense.”

For his part, the sole authority of Culture of the state of Yaracuy, Juan Parada, who received the certificate, thanked the support of President Nicolás Maduro and the Ministry of Culture, and reiterated his commitment to working to protect and disseminate this demonstration.

“This certificate is not only a recognition, but also a responsibility that we assume on behalf of the Government of Yaracuy State. It is our duty to preserve and safeguard this cultural legacy for future generations, providing the necessary support to ensure that its essence remains alive,” he said.

As part of the cultural day, more than one hundred drummers participated in the “Skin Echoes” ringing, reaffirming their African and indigenous roots.

In addition, more than 300 local cultivators, creators and artists participated in various exchanges of knowledge and traditions. In turn, the event concluded with a recognition of the Venezuelan Network of Women of Ancestral Roots, prior to the traditional “Candle Dance ”.
