African Union demands full Palestinian membership in the UN

The African Union closed the 39th Assembly with a proposal in which it requested the full membership of Palestine in the United Nations (UN).
The leaders affirmed that the accession responds to the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to an end to the occupation. They also rejected any forced displacement and warned about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
On behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas, Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa denounced the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and settler violence, in order to gain more political support, Almayadeen reported.
The summit, held under the slogan “Ensure the sustainable availability of water and safe sanitation systems to achieve the objectives of Agenda 2063”, reaffirmed commitments related to regional integration, long-term development and shared responsibility in relation to conflicts.
At a joint conference, the President of Burundi and the new pro tempore president of the African Union, Évariste Ndayishimiye, together with the President of the Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, reported that the deliberations focused on internal reforms, relations with the G20 and the review of reports on Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
