The writer Alexander Torres Iriarte won the 9th National Biennial of Literature Félix Armando Núñez, Essay mention, with his work “The Perennial Question. Identity in the Mexican essay of the mid-20th century”.
The jury, composed of Pablo Nigal Palmar Paz, Alejandro Bruzual and Dionys Cecilia Rivas Armas, unanimously chose the work presented under the pseudonym Desiderio María and found, once the corresponding plea was opened, that it belongs to Alexander Torres Iriarte.
In the verdict, the jury highlights his remarkable approach in theoretical and methodological terms, his important exploration of American identity focused on Mexican authors, his correct and fluent writing style and his excellent bibliographic management.
In addition, it indicates that the essay provides important references on the subject through the interwoven dialogue of five essayists: Antonio Caso, Samuel Ramos, Octavio Paz, Emilio Uranga and Leopoldo Zea.
The jury also highlights the vindication through this essay of the cultural heritage of Our America and the decolonization of its thought and historical memory through the self-affirmation of Mexican identity in the 20th century.
The winner will receive a cash prize awarded by the National Book Center (CENAL) and the publication of the book by Monte Ávila Editores.
