The outfielder of the Tiburones de La Guaira, Luis Matos, won the Rookie of the Year Award for the 2024-2025 season of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).

Matos was only one vote away from winning the award unanimously, after obtaining 54 of the 55 possible votes for first place and 1 for second.

His only closest was José Fernández, shortstop for Caribes de Anzoátegui, who got 1 vote for first place and 35 for second and 12 for third.

For his part, Luisangel Acuña de Cardenales de Lara, completed the list of honor after obtaining 12 votes for first place and 23 for third place.

Matos , 22, had an extraordinary season in which he was in the Top 10 of the main offensive categories: games (2nd, with 55), scored (8th, with 34), hits (4th, with 66), doubles (leader, with 20), home runs (sixth, with 10), RBIs (3rd, with 41), bases reached (3rd, with 118), slugging (8th, with .536), in addition to finishing with an average of .300 according to information published by the LVBP.

“I am very happy and proud to receive this Rookie of the Year Award, and I also have the good news that for the first time my parents will be able to see me play in the big leagues this year, so I couldn't be happier right now,” said Matos.

The gardener became the 14th player in the schools to win the Rookie of the Year award and joins Juan Quintana (1963-1964), Romo Blanco (1973-1974), Juan Francisco Monasterios (1976- 1977), Gustavo Polidor (1980-1981), Argenis Salazar (1981-1982), Norman Carrasco (1982- 1983), Carlos Mendoza (2000-2001), Francisco Rodríguez (2003-2004), Maximiliano Ramírez (2008-2009), Héctor Sánchez (2011-2012), Salvador Pérez (2012-2013), Carlos Sánchez (2013-2014), and Odubel Herrera (2014-2015).
