In an event that has generated the rejection of various human rights organizations, the Argentine government proceeded to expel the Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, coordinator of the Global Sumud Flotilla, after being detained and subjected to interrogation at the Jorge Newbery Airport in the City of Buenos Aires.

Ávila arrived in the country with the purpose of participating in the official launch of the Argentine chapter of the international coalition of humanitarian flotillas. This global initiative organizes the delivery of essential aid and medical supplies to the Gaza Strip, seeking to alleviate the humanitarian crisis that the Palestinian population is going through under conditions of siege.

Despite the humanitarian nature of his visit, the activist was intercepted by the immigration authorities. According to members of the coalition, Ávila faced unfounded accusations of alleged “support for terrorism”, a narrative that, they say, seeks to criminalize international solidarity and the defense of human rights in the context of the conflict in the Middle East.

This is not the first time that Thiago Ávila has been the target of this type of maneuver; he has previously reported unjustified delays and harassment at other border points due to his work to make the Palestinian cause visible.

The expulsion of the activist from Argentine territory sets an alarming precedent for international organizations working in humanitarian aid logistics and citizen diplomacy.
