This Thursday, a group of Greenpeace activists was arrested by the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) after a symbolic protest on the steps of the Legislative Palace in Buenos Aires.
The demonstration took place a few hours before the Senate debated the amendment to the Glacier Law, promoted by the government of Javier Milei, which proposes to make the protection of periglacial zones more flexible to promote investments in megaminery and hydrocarbons.
Citizens installed toilets and banners with a direct message to legislators: “Senators, don't shit in the water.” At least a dozen of them were arrested by the PFA minutes after the action began. Journalists covering the event were also assaulted, including an A24 cameraman, who was assaulted and taken away by force.
As explained by scientists and experts, cited by Telesur as geologist and glaciologist Lucas Ruiz, the initiative does not precisely redefine what is considered a periglacial environment, but rather gives provinces the power to decide which areas to protect, weakening national conservation standards.
