On the occasion of commemorating the Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus and the 81st anniversary of the Liberation of the Territory from Nazi invaders, the Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, accompanied this European country's accredited ambassador to Venezuela, Andrei Molchan, at the wreath ceremony before the sarcophagus that holds the mortal remains of the Liberator Simon Bolivar , in the National Pantheon in Caracas.
“Today we reaffirm our commitment to peace and the self-determination of peoples,” said the Foreign Minister on his Telegram channel, regarding his attendance at the ceremony.
The solemn ceremony began with the intonation of the glorious notes of the national anthems of both countries, followed by the placement of the wreath and the signing of the book of minutes, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Europe and North America; Andrea Corao; ambassadors and consuls of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as officials of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
Belarus celebrates both its Independence Day and the Liberation of its territory from Nazi invaders, on July 3, the date on which Soviet troops and Belarusian partisans entered Minsk in 1944, freeing the city and, later, the rest of the country from German control.
The European nation, which was then part of the Soviet Union, suffered greatly under the Nazi occupation, with a policy of terror and genocide. Their release not only marked the end of the occupation, but also a milestone and the beginning of a new phase in the country's history.
