As part of the 144th anniversary of José Martí's
arrival in Venezuela and the 172nd anniversary of his birth, the Bolivarian
Government unveiled a statue in honor of the Cuban hero, in the Quenepe sector of Maiquetía, La Guaira state.
The activity was led by the Cuban
ambassador to Venezuela, Dagoberto Rodríguez, and the governor of La
Guaira, José Alejandro Terán.
During the event, Ambassador Rodríguez
highlighted the depth of the historical ties between Cuba and La Guaira, and
recalled that these relations were strengthened during the Vargas disaster in 1999.
“Today, with the inauguration of this monument to
José Martí, these relationships are deepening and strengthening. On behalf of the
Cuban people, I thank the people of La Guaira and Governor Terán for this gesture
of solidarity and historical memory that unites our peoples,” he said.
For his part, Governor Terán highlighted the relevance of
the tribute to Martí and highlighted his coincidence in ideals with
Simón Bolívar, despite not having shared the same historical time.
“Martí and Bolívar shared the greatness
of their thinking for freedom, equality and justice. This monument
symbolizes the legacy of independence and humanity that José Martí left for all humanity,” he said and thanked
the Cuban people for their unconditional solidarity
with Venezuela.
In addition, he stressed that “with this tribute to
Martí, we also pay tribute to the detachment and sense of humanity that characterizes Cuba.
It is a humble but profoundly sincere gesture that unites our peoples
even more.”
The tribute included the traditional walk along the “Camino de los Españoles”, a mountain route that Martí traveled 144 years ago from the port of La Guaira to Caracas.
At the end of the walk, Venezuelans and Cubans made a floral offering before the statue of Simon Bolivar in Plaza Bolívar in Caracas, to evoke the symbolic dialogue between Martí and the Liberator in the search for the freedom of the Great Homeland.
