Bolivian region of Santa Cruz registers 7.3 million hectares affected by forest fires

The head of the Departmental Emergency Operations Center (COED), Jhonny Rojas, reported that Santa Cruz in Bolivia is facing a serious environmental crisis, registering more than 7.3 million hectares of forests and grasslands consumed by forest fires in more than four months.


“We are facing the biggest environmental disaster the department of Santa Cruz has ever experienced. The hectares burned already exceed seven million, and the number continues to increase,” Rojas said, while currently, 58 active fires have been registered in 21 municipalities in the region.


According to the state National Institute for Agrarian Reform (INRA), he specified that the South American nation has lost more than 30 million hectares of forests and pastures due to fires from 2019 to date, reports the Xinhua news agency.
