As part of
the 21st International Book Fair of Venezuela 2025 (FILVEN), the book “Winds
and Tides of the Dream Boat”, by the writer Chela Vargas, published by the publisher El Perro y la Rana, was presented and named in the Gonzalo Fragui room.
During the
presentation of the work, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto
Villegas, highlighted the emotional and symbolic nature of this presentation,
which he defined as an act of collective love for the author.
“I think
this presentation stands alone. It is a presentation of love, which
we profess without a doubt for this author, who is much more than an
author, who is nothing more and nothing less than Chela Vargas,” he said.
Villegas
established a significant coincidence between this publication and another one
recently presented at FILVEN. “A few days ago we presented a book by Rosinés Chávez called 'The boat of our unfinished dreams'.
And this book is called 'Winds and Tides of the
Dream Bar'. I would say it's the same boat, that of Chávez and that of Chela,” he said.
He also valued
the content of the book as a testimony of coherence, resistance and moral guidance
in difficult times. “Something that is reflected in the lyrics of these articles
is the recurrence of that mast called Chela Vargas, which in the midst of such complex
circumstances has guided our course. The variety of topics
addressed here speaks for itself,” he said.
He added that this
book is like those good wines that are taken by sips (...) “Chela's old
career enlightens us. I ask you to make an imaginary toast to
Chela, to this book, to a lifetime of struggles and to the victories that
your struggles will conquer. Chela, your fight has not been in vain. Look at
all that surrounds us, an infinite love for example, for women, for the
future and for the children who keep us in the same boat as Chela and
Chávez.”
The work brings together
a selection of political opinion articles written by Vargas over
several decades, in texts that give an account of his critical thinking, his
commitment to popular struggles and his unbreakable link with the Venezuelan revolutionary process.
