This Sunday, it became known that Morgan McSweeney, chief of staff of the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, announced his resignation in the midst of the scandal surrounding the ties of the former British ambassador to the United States (USA), Peter Mandelson, with the well-known financier Jeffrey Epstein.

“After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. It has damaged our party, our country and our trust in our own politics,” McSweeney said in a letter sent to British media, quoted by Sky News and Sputnik.

In addition, McSweeney stated that he personally supported Mandelson's candidacy for the US embassy and took full responsibility for the decision and added his full confidence in Starmer.

“Although I didn't control the verification process, I think that now this process needs to be thoroughly reviewed,” he said.

Following the release of the last package of Epstein files by the US Department of Justice, British media revealed that Mandelson, while serving as EU Trade Commissioner in 2009 during the administration of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown (2007-2010), sent an internal document from the UK government to Epstein.

The British police launched a criminal investigation against Mandelson for sending that letter.
