On August 16, 1975, Carlos Raúl Villanueva, father of the modern architect in Venezuela, died.
Considered to be the most important architect of the 20th century, he transformed the traditional Renaissance style through the impact of sociological, technological and aesthetic changes for the time.
Villanueva was born in London, England, on May 30, 1900. In 1928 he traveled to Venezuela, fell in love with the country and later became nationalized. His designs and unpublished works gave a different face to the nation, including:
University City of Caracas, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000; Plaza de Toros Maestranza César Girón, a work that was declared a National Historical Monument on April 15, 1994; the Museum of Fine Arts of Caracas. Together with the sculptor Francisco Narváez, he carried out the redevelopment project of El Silencio; among others.
Today, the legacy of this distinguished architect, who died in Caracas after suffering from Parkinson's disease, is maintained through the Villanueva Foundation.
