Chileans were dismayed and questioned the statements of the presidential candidate of the National Libertarian Party, Johannes Kaisser, who stated that he would support a coup d'etat such as the one that occurred in 1973, against the president of the Popular Unity, Salvador Allende, if necessary.

In statements to the media, reported by the TASS agency, Kaisser said that “without a doubt, absolutely” he would support an assault like the one that occurred at the time.

The candidate for the Palacio de La Moneda emphasized that he would accept all the consequences of such an action.

The statements came after the sweeping victory of Jeannette Jara, proposed by the Communist Party, in the primaries of the ruling bloc Unity for Chile, and her uptick in the polls of intention to vote for the presidential elections next November.

In response, independent deputy Camila Musante asked to send Kaiser to the legislative body's Ethics Committee because of the controversial statements, which she described as a threat to the country.

“From the House of Democracy, we are not going to tolerate threats to democracy,” said the parliamentarian.

He added that both for him and for all those who wish to relive the country's pain and suffering during the dictatorship, human rights violations will not be validated, nor will persecution and assassinations for political reasons be justified.

For her part, Senator Fabiola Campillay pointed out that what was said by presidential candidate Kaiser is a brutal demonstration of the contempt for life of all Chileans.

“You who justify the death of your compatriots, I remind you that towns, fields and cities were dyed with the blood of those who were disappeared, tortured and murdered by the dictatorship,” he added in a video posted on his social networks.

He stressed that while thousands of families are looking for their loved ones, “the so-called patriots, without disgust and with a smile on their faces, dream of repeating the barbarism of 1973, that is pure misery”.
