At the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, the Deputy Undersecretary of the United States (USA), Christopher Yeaw, accused the People's Republic of China of deliberately expanding its nuclear arsenal, “without transparency or indication of its intentions or objectives.”
The Chinese Ambassador for Disarmament Affairs, Shen Jian, in response called American accusations that China is carrying out explosive nuclear tests “unfounded”.
He also stressed that the allegations of the US authorities are simply an excuse invented to justify their own possible resumption of nuclear tests.
The Asian official urged Washington to reaffirm the commitment of the five nuclear-weapon States to a moratorium on nuclear testing and to defend the global consensus on a ban on nuclear testing.
After declaring that Beijing defends an arms control philosophy that is “just, cooperative, balanced and effective”, he asserted that China is committed to strengthening international security cooperation and improving global security governance
The Chinese ambassador to the United Nations (UN) noted that nuclear arms control is an important safeguard for maintaining global strategic stability.
“The international community must adhere to a just, reasonable, rational and pragmatic approach to nuclear disarmament, persist in resolving nuclear non-proliferation problems through political and diplomatic means, respect the rule of international law and revitalize multilateral arms control and disarmament mechanisms,” he stressed.
