The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) of Colombia confirmed the death of at least 17 people due to the floods that have hit several departments of the South American country since the beginning of February, the Telesur website reported.

According to the latest UNGRD report, more than 250,000 people have been affected by the rains that have fallen on part of Colombian territory, adding that 18,000 homes have been damaged and up to 4,000 have been completely destroyed.

He also reported that 223 tons of humanitarian aid have been allocated to the department of Córdoba alone to alleviate the needs of affected families. Among the products supplied are food, hygiene items, water, hammocks or sheets.

Colombian authorities have indicated that an atypical cold front that crosses the country has intensified rains and winds, generating a national emergency.

“The Government responds with a presence in the territories and aid to protect affected families,” said the Colombian Presidency in a message on social networks.

Schools, hospitals or community centers have suffered the consequences of the rains and must undergo repair work. The UNGRD numbers more than 11,000 hectares affected by water.

In this regard, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, asked the Constitutional Court last Tuesday to lift the temporary suspension of the decree of economic and social emergency to cover unforeseeable needs, such as those resulting from floods.

In the account of the social network X, the Presidency of Colombia, highlights: “The @ MinAgricultura, @ Finagro and the @ BancoAgrario are organized so that farmers in Córdoba, Sucre and Antioquia, affected by the winter emergency, can refinance their agricultural development credits. This measure seeks to alleviate the economic situation of producers whose productive projects have been impacted by the rains.”
