Colombia: Córdoba is severely affected as a result of the climate crisis

The department of Córdoba in Colombia has been affected as a result of the climate crisis. The figures reveal the magnitude of the disaster with 14 people dead, more than nine thousand homes destroyed, 50,000 families damaged (about 300,000 people) and 35 thousand productive hectares submerged, as reported by Governor Erasmo Zuleta.

“This is an unprecedented situation,” said the local authority, while 24 of the 30 municipalities are fighting floods caused by the collision of two cold fronts. The emergency also extends to areas of, where destruction is progressing while the rains continue.

Colombia is facing an unusual intensification of rainfall associated with the La Niña phenomenon so far in 2026, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) extended the red alert for floods due to the persistence of intense rains and sudden increases in strategic basins.

The crisis has reached municipalities such as Valledupar, El Copey, Pueblo Bello and Bosconia, which went on red alert due to the rising of the Cesar River, with record rains that generated local emergencies.

The increase in the levels of the Sinú River caused high alert in Montería and Lorica, where floods and complications for urban and rural mobility were reported.
