President Gustavo Petro denounced this Monday, through his account in X, that the government of Peru has occupied territory that, according to the Protocol of Rio de Janeiro of 1942, belongs to Colombia, warning of a possible direct impact on the city of Leticia and its function as an Amazonian port.
“The government of Peru has occupied territory that belongs to Colombia and has violated the Rio de Janeiro Protocol that ended it,” Petro said.
In his message, the president recalled that the treaty, which put an end to border disputes after the Colombian-Peruvian war, established as a border the deepest line of the Amazon River and defined that any territorial difference would be resolved through diplomatic channels
“Islands have appeared that are north of the current deepest line, and the Government of Peru has just appropriated them by law and placed the capital of a municipality on land that, by treaty, must belong to Colombia,” he denounced.
