The Colombian government is carrying out a military operation in the Catatumbo region, where armed clashes continue between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the 33rd Front, a dissident of the extinct FARC.
Provided vehicles and more than 9,000 military and police personnel are deployed in the El Tablazo sector, on the Astilleros-Tibú highway, reports the RT agency.
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, through his social networks, pointed out that the offensive against the ELN continues to grow and soon the civilian population will have the security to be able to return to their homes.
He also confirmed that 63 members of the FARC surrendered with their weapons and are in the hands of justice.
For his part, Iván Velasquez López, Colombian defense minister, said that the operation seeks to guarantee security, so that the displaced can return to their homes.
Velásquez requested the cooperation of the Venezuelan authorities to prevent members of the ELN from fleeing to that country.
