The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, signed decree 1,193 this Thursday, November 13, extending for one year the declaration of a national disaster throughout the country due to the effects of “climate variability”, which to date has affected 29 of the 32 departments and more than 250 municipalities.

The document, points out, among other data, a report prepared by the Risk Management Unit, “between November 13, 2024 and October 31, 2025, due to conditions associated with predominantly rainy weather, there were events that left 165 dead, 208 injured, 241,567 families and 842,622 people affected, exceeding by a percentage of 32% what happened in the same period of the year immediately previous”.

Added to this was “a marked heterogeneity” in the rainfall pattern recorded in the country, so that areas such as the capital, Bogotá, experienced marked water stress and others were hit by heavy rainfall.

All of this, they explained, resulted in “an increase in the occurrence of emergencies due to phenomena of hydrometeorological origin”.
