Conclave to elect Pope Francis's successor will begin on May 7

This Monday, more than 180 cardinals gathered at the Fifth General Congregation of the Vatican decided April 28 that the Conclave to elect the successor of Pope Francis will begin next Wednesday, May 7 in the Sistine Chapel.

From the New Synod Hall, the cardinals presented 20 interventions on the Church, its relationship with today's world and the challenges that the new Pontiff will face.

In addition, three new cardinals were appointed to the Commission that will assist Cardinal Camarlengo: Reinhard Marx, Luis Antonio Tagle and Dominique Mamberti.

The General Congregations will continue until May 6, with the exception of Thursday, May 1 and Sunday, May 4. On Tuesday, April 29, the session will include a meditation by Donato Ogliari, Abbot of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

The electoral process will begin on the morning of May 7 with the solemn Mass “pro electing Pontifice”, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals. In the afternoon, the cardinals will hold a procession to the Sistine Chapel, where they will sing the hymn “Veni, Creator Spiritus” and take an oath before starting the voting.
