The deputy to the National Assembly (AN) Iris Varela expressed strong criticism of the institutional architecture of the European Union (EU), considering that its member States have delegated key aspects of their sovereignty to a supranational body.

During his participation in the Sin Truco Ni Maña program, Varela said that “the European Union, which currently brings together 27 countries after leaving the United Kingdom in 2020, has transformed its States into limited managers of basic functions such as education and health, while strategic areas such as finance, defense and geopolitics are under the supervision of the supranational body”.

The parliamentarian also questioned the internal functioning of the European Parliament, calling it “de facto bicameral”, stating that the European Council acts as a second chamber, bringing together heads of state and ministers from member countries.

“They gave up sovereignty. They can't do anything,” emphasized Varela, referring to the room for maneuver that these governments keep in the face of the guidelines of the European bloc.
