The former president of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, did not hesitate to point out, from her account on the digital platform X, that the current president, Javier Milei, is repeating the mistakes of his predecessor, Mauricio Macri, in resorting to foreign debt as a solution to the economic problems of the South American nation.
In the above-mentioned message, Fernández challenged Milei by asking him if he really believed that a loan from the IMF would not increase Argentina's foreign debt. He recalled how Macri justified his indebtedness in dollars under similar premises, which eventually led the country to request a massive financial rescue.
The former president, as reported by Telesur, emphasized the difference between internal and external debts, stressing that non-transferable bills between the Treasury and the Central Bank are less problematic than obligations to the IMF, which come with strict conditions and high interest rates.
In his criticism, he also highlighted the inconsistency in Milei's promises regarding the Central Bank. While during his campaign he had promised to close this institution, he now seeks to strengthen his balance sheet through a loan from the IMF. “Wasn't it that you wanted to shut down the Central Bank because he was the biggest thief?” , questioned CFK, evidencing what it considers to be a contradiction in the current government's economic policy.
The former president did not stop there, she also warned of the consequences of the monetary approach that Milei adopted to combat inflation. He stated that the current strategy is based on keeping the prices of the official dollar under control and using reserves to avoid an exchange crisis, which could be unsustainable in the long term.
CFK concluded his message by posing a crucial question: “What is the IMF going to demand from you with the exchange rate? Devaluation: Before or after the elections?” This question reflects concern about how current economic decisions could impact the country's immediate future, especially with a close electoral context.
Finally, Cristina Fernández closed her criticism by recalling the achievements of her administration in terms of disindebtedness during the term of office of Néstor Kirchner.
He assured that Milei is not the first government to have a surplus while paying debt, urging the president to stop repeating what he considers a fallacy.
