Cuba confirms contact with the United States to explore avenues of dialogue

The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported that his Government maintains contacts with representatives of the United States Administration, with the objective of opening spaces for dialogue.

He stressed that these contacts, in which the revolutionary leader Raúl Castro also participates, are aimed at finding solutions through dialogue for the existing differences between the two countries.

Díaz-Canel specified that the meetings were held in a respectful manner and that the Cuban side reiterated its willingness to carry out actions for the benefit of both nations.

“It has not been and is not practical to respond to speculative campaigns on this type of issue,” he said in a public statement, stressing that the situation is being treated seriously because it “affects bilateral ties” and requires “enormous efforts to find solutions and create spaces for understanding”.

The president indicated that Havana assured that any negotiation must be carried out on the basis of equality, respect for sovereignty and recognition of the self-determination of governments.
