The number of fatalities from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Myanmar at the end of March has risen to 3,798, the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported.

The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Myanmar, Thushara Fernando, announced on April 25 that the number of deaths amounted to 3,700. However, the Burmese media updated the figure as of April 29, and also reported 5 thousand 106 injured and 106 missing in six seriously affected regions.

Search and rescue teams have been working intensively in the disaster area. “So far, 653 people have been rescued alive from the rubble and the bodies of 778 deceased have been recovered,” said Global New Light of Myanmar.

The earthquake occurred on March 28 at 0620 GMT, with an epicenter about 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Sagaing, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Given the magnitude of the tragedy, the Burmese authorities have requested international assistance, declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and established a week of national mourning from March 31 to April 6.

The earthquake was also felt in neighboring countries, particularly in Thailand.
