An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale shook northern Chile this Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

As reported by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), citing international media, the earthquake occurred at 16:43 local time (20.43 GMT), 104 kilometers deep. So far, the authorities have reported no casualties or material damage.

The earthquake had its epicenter in the east of the town of Quillagua, an oasis located in the northern region of Antofagasta and was perceptible in nearby regions such as Tarapacá, Arica and Parinacota.

In addition, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy reported that the earthquake does not have the conditions to generate a tsunami off the Chilean coast. However, the National Disaster Prevention and Response System (SENAPRED) stated that it is continuing to evaluate potential damage to people, infrastructure and basic services.

It should be noted that Chile is one of the most seismic countries in the world. The Latin American country experienced a mega-earthquake in Valdivia in 1960, also known as the Great Chilean earthquake, whose magnitude of 9.5 made it the most powerful earthquake recorded in human history.
