Earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook Türkiye this Sunday

International media report that an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook the province of Balikesir, in western Türkiye, this Sunday, August 10, and was felt in numerous cities, including Istanbul and Izmir, the teleSUR website reported.
According to press reports, the shocks were felt for about 20 or 30 seconds in at least 10 regions, including Istanbul, which was confirmed by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who explained that it covered a large area.
After the earthquake, which occurred at 19:53 local time and whose epicenter was located in the district of Sindirgi, province of Balikesir, at an estimated depth of 11 km, there were several aftershocks, according to information published by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
In a statement released by Yerlikaya through social networks, the agency said: “AFAD and all relevant teams from our institutions immediately began field studies on the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces.”
So far there is no official information on victims or damage, although work is being done to determine this. Images disseminated through networks show material damage to buildings.
In Balikesir, images were captured of a building that collapsed and of dozens of people who came to the site to help.
