A strong explosion occurred this Friday morning at a gas station in the Prenestino Labicano neighborhood in Rome, Italy, during the discharge of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), leaving at least 30 people injured, according to local authorities. Two of the injured suffered burns, one of them in serious condition.
The detonation caused a large fire, visible from various parts of the city, and material damage to nearby buildings, including a sports center that housed a summer children's camp. Three residential blocks were evacuated as a precaution.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reported that the truck driver detected a leak and alerted emergency services before the explosion. Other minor detonations followed, causing a shock wave, throwing debris up to 300 meters.
-According to what was published on the Telesur web portal, ten fire crews are working in the area and managed to contain the main fire, although extinguishing work continues. Civil Protection urged the population to close windows, avoid air conditioning with an external outlet and wash fruits and vegetables grown in the area.
A subway station was closed and the area cordoned off. Pope Leo XI V expressed his solidarity with the victims through a message on social networks: “I pray for the people affected... I follow with concern the developments of this tragic incident.”
