Under the slogan “Reading humanizes”, the twenty-first International Book Fair of Venezuela (FILVEN) was inaugurated in Plaza Bolívar in the administrative capital of the state Guayana Esequiba, a space for cultural and literary encounter, which reaffirms Venezuelan sovereignty.

The opening ceremony was led by Governor Neil Villamizar, together with the Deputy Minister for the Promotion of Cultural Economy and president of the CENAL National Book Center, Raúl Cazal, accompanied by William Castillo, Deputy Minister of Anti-Blockade Policies and the President of Books of the South, Omar Rangel.

Villamizar gave special recognition to the deployment achieved to highlight the meaning of the fair, stressing that it could not be anywhere else than in Guayana Esequiba. “We are extremely happy to open this journey that the International Book Fair will take place in several locations in the country. Starting it here is a source of pride and national identity,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of culture and knowledge in times of adversity. “At this time when the Homeland is under siege, we stand firm here. This firmness is reflected in activities like this one, where culture runs throughout the territory,” he added.

In addition, he thanked the authorities present and reaffirmed their commitment to continue the fight for the vindication of the Homeland and the recovery of Guiana Esequiba.

This time, the regional writer Horacio Cabrera Sifontes, a historian and filmmaker who dedicated much of his research to Venezuelan geography and memory, is being honored.
