Foreign Minister Yván Gil, during the Debate on Item 30 of the Agenda of the 79th Regular Session of the General Assembly, on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, assured that the tariffs imposed by the United States seek to coerce and subordinate the nations of the developing world and represent “an escalation of unilateralism and intimidating practices”.
In this regard, he explained that “the so-called tariffs that are intended to be imposed today pursue objectives other than those related to trade (...) they seek objectives similar to those of the policy of unilateral coercive measures that the U.S. government has embraced for decades” (...) “to coerce and subordinate the nations of the developing world, in order to preserve their agendas of domination and to advance their selfish neocolonial and geostrategic interests.”
In that regard, he urged countries to “avoid falling into the trap of those who resort to the enactment and imposition of unilateral coercive measures, into the trap of those who persist in their efforts not only to impose a false narrative, to confuse and deceive the international community, but even to justify and legitimate the use of such policies and practices”.
